A 2D hand-drawn puzzle game

Pettson's Inventions 3 gives you a scenario and a series of objects. You have to slot the objects into the scenario in order to complete an invention that achieves whatever end the main character sets.

Slot pieces and parts into a larger machine

Pettson's Inventions 3 has thirty six inventions that are split into six different scenes/areas. You are presented with a scene and the inventor pops in from the right and gives you an idea of your goal. On the left are a series of objects. Drag the objects from the left into the scene and place them in certain areas. If you place them in the correct areas, then they will interact and form an invention. If you place them in the wrong places, then they may interact, but the end result will be undesirable. Move the pieces around until you have figured out the correct configuration for each invention. The game is aimed at children, which is why there are no in-app adverts or in-app purchases.

Taxing for older children and tweens

Pettson's Inventions 3 looks like a young children’s game, but it requires deductive, investigative and reasoning skills that younger children do not possess. Getting started is often the hardest part because it is similar to a jigsaw in that it is easier to see where everything goes once a few pieces are in place. You can make the game harder by turning the “Fake Objects” function off, which makes the game taxing enough for older teens to enjoy. There are no clues or hints if you become stuck on one invention.

PROS

  • Oddly challenging in a jigsaw way
  • Children’s book illustrator Sven Nordqvist created the images

CONS

  • Getting started requires trial and error experimentation
  • Becomes frustrating and there are no in-game clues
